The Greater Atlanta area contains more than 1,500 churches and religious buildings, representing pretty much every denomination and religion that you can think of.

The Cathedral of St. Philip serves as the city's seat of the Episcopal Diocese and stands on the northern side of Atlanta, on Peachtree Road and close to West Wesley Park. Literally just down the road is the equally noteworthy Cathedral of Christ the King, which dates back to the 1930s and serves the city's Roman Catholic Archdiocese.

The Cathedral of St. Philip dates back to the mid-19th century and certainly ranks amongst the most imposing landmarks in the uptown Buckhead neighborhood. This enormous structure features detailed architecture with many stone carvings, while the cavernous interior is equally impressive. Attractions include regular guided tours, numerous original period features and daily services.

Cathedral of Christ the King

The imposing Cathedral of Christ the King is an important Roman Catholic church, in the Buckhead district. Highlights include classical stone architecture, a large decorated interior, stained-glass windows and regular weekend services.

Monastery of the Holy Spirit

Located in the neighboring town of Conyers, to the southeast of the city, Abbey Church dates back to the 1940s and is a working monastery. With regular masses and meetings, members of the public are always welcome. As of 2011 a new Monastic Heritage Center, incorporating the Abbey Garden Center, the Abbey Gift Shop and Café, the Bonsai Nursery and Green House, Central Courtyard, the Memorial Plaza and Prayer Walk and the Visitor Center and Historic Barn, opened.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Sacred Heart Basilica is now better known by its official title, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Built in 1898, this Roman Catholic church was designated as a basilica as recently as 2010. Nearby modern office blocks provide a rather plain and contrasting background to the attractive architecture of this historic red-brick building.

Ebenezer Baptist Church
