One of the most renowned art museums in the US, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) displays extensive collections of art from around the world, including Islamic art, Renaissance paintings, modern sculptures and abstract photography, among other media and genres. Displayed in a number of art galleries, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions as well as film screenings and concerts. The LA County Museum of Art (LACMA) stands alongside Hancock Park and also acts as a cultural center for the city.

Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Culture Center

If you want to view paintings by some of the world's masters, then this is the gallery to visit. The Armand Hammer boasts works by Monet, Cassatt, Van Gogh and Pissaro, as well as works by other impressionists among more contemporary pieces, while there is a sculpture garden outside. This museum also comprises the Billy Wilder Theater and is situated close to the Geffen Playhouse, the University of California LA and the Westwood Memorial Park, and doesn't stop at visual arts - it also hosts regular exhibitions in dance, music and poetry.

Designed by renowned Japanese architect, Arata Isozaki, this Los Angeles art gallery is not to be missed. Contemporary masterpieces by the likes of Mark Rothco, Franz Kline and Claes Oldenburg will leave any modern art follower feeling happy, while those who are dragged around by their art-loving other half might appreciate the delectable Mediterranean cuisine on offer in the acclaimed onsite restaurant. Close by, visitors may also like to combine their visit with a trip to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Million Dollar Theater or the LA City Hall.

Fisher Gallery

Accessible and free, and located right next to the campus of the University of Southern California, the Fisher Gallery has been running in LA for more than 60 years and has built up a strong reputation with its collection of both contemporary and more traditional works. Frequent visiting exhibitions are on show here, alongside 18th-century British portraiture and 19th-century American landscapes.

Museum of Neon Art (MONA)

If you have never considered neon lights to be an art form, this attraction may make you think again. A popular, although sometimes underrated medium, electric art normally only features in the form of signs at night venues. Here you can see neon art in a different setting, with the exhibits at the Museum of Neon Art tracing the history of electric art nicely complementing the light displays. Particular highlights include neon signs from both the Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Brown Derby.
