Getting Around, San Gimignano Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(San Gimignano, Tuscany, Italy)

Townscape pictureA fairly small town with much history, San Gimignano lends itself to those who prefer to travel around on foot. However, bus transport is always on hand should you intend to travel outside of San Gimignano and around Tuscany, with Florence being an extremely popular excursion.

Hiring a car is always a very convenient way to travel into San Gimignano, should you be flying into Italy and arriving at one of the nearby airports, such as Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport or Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport. Although the area within the town walls is actually traffic free, you are able to use a number of reasonably priced car parks nearby, which are located right next to the town walls and the Porta San Giovanni, such as the Parcheggio Montemaggio.

Buses and Coaches

Buses provide a very cheap way to travel outside of San Gimignano and around Tuscany. Departing from the town's bus terminal on the Piazzale dei Martiri di Montemaggio, next to the Porta San Giovanni, bus transport (SS2 / SS68) links destinations such as Florence (75 minutes) and Siena (90 minutes), which often stop and change at Poggibonsi. Those wishing to travel to Volterra by bus will need to change at Colle di Val d'Elsa. A number of free car parks are available on the north-western side of San Gimignano, in the newer areas of town. Alternatively, those parking outside of the town walls can travel into the centre by using cheap electric shuttle bus transport, which runs all through the day, between Porta San Giovanni and Porta San Matteo.

Trains

There is no actual rail service in San Gimignano, with the nearby train station being located in Poggibonsi, which is connected by regular bus transport. Trains often run between Florence and Poggibonsi, although few are direct and most travel via the Tuscan town of Empoli.
