Picture of the town centreMany tourists holidaying in the hill town of San Gimignano are often pleasantly surprised to find a number of good art galleries. San Gimignano's Palazzo Comunale (Communal Palace) is not only a particularly beautiful building, but home to the Town Gallery, and here you will encounter an impressive collection of Italian art works.

Those with an interest in religious art simply should pay the Collegiata a visit, since this church is amongst the most frescoed of all the churches in Tuscany and its elaborate interior decorations are often quite overwhelming. Other art galleries in San Gimignano include the Galleria Gagliardi, the Museo d'Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art), and also the Galleria d'Arte Contemporaneo (Gallery of Contemporary Art).

The Galleria Gagliardi is a spectacular gallery and contains an enormous collection of modern ceramic sculptures, which are amongst the most comprehensive of its kind in the whole of Italy. Established in 1991, exhibits also include pieces created from steel, iron, marble, wood and bronze, as well as some contemporary paintings and temporary exhibitions by Italian artists.

Town Gallery

Visitors to the Palazzo Comunale's Town Gallery will be able to enjoy a wealth of historic paintings, murals and other art works, with impressive pieces by prominent Italian artists such as Benozzo Gozzoli (1421 - 1497), Domenico di Michelino (1417 - 1491), Filippo Lippi (1457 - 1504) and Pier Francesco Fiorentino (1444 - 1497). Head to Dante's Hall and check out the enormous Gothic-style fresco, created by Siena's famed painter, Lippo Memmi (1291 - 1356).

Galleria d'Arte Contemporaneo (Gallery of Contemporary Art)

Housed within the former convent of Santa Chiara, the Galleria d'Arte Contemporaneo is close to both the Piazza del Duomo and the Porta San Matteo. Various modern paintings and sculptures are displayed within this gallery, with pieces created by a number of Tuscan artists from both the 19th and 20th centuries.

Collegiata

The Collegiata is the town's most noteworthy church and resides within the very heart of San Gimignano, on the Piazza del Duomo. Inside, the frescoes are extremely well preserved and very colourful, contrasting with the Romanesque marble arcades.

Museo d'Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art)

Many fine works of art with a strong religious theme are to be found within the Museo d'Arte Sacra, on the Piazza Pecori. The majority of these historic paintings and sculptures have been collected from the various churches around the town. You will find the entrance is located next to the small side courtyard and near to the Collegiata.
