If you have brought your own transport in the form of a car, then day trips outside of Cheltenham couldn't be easier, with A-roads and motorways being relatively close by.

Within the town itself, taxi transport is always on hand and perfect for short journeys, while buses and coaches travel outside of Cheltenham, to towns such as Cirencester and Gloucester, and the popular village of Broadway.

Gloucestershire Airport is a small facility and can be found in nearby Staverton, being around 6 km / 4 miles to the west of Cheltenham and alongside Gloucester. A limited selection of charter flights travel between Belfast, Guernsey, Jersey and also the Isle of Man, with Manx2 being the main airline operating here. For more international destinations, head to Bristol Airport (BRS), which is around 80 km / 50 miles away and to the south-west.

Car Rental

The town is conveniently close to a number of prominent regional trunk roads, being sited next to the M5 motorway and the A417 to Swindon. Visitors with their own set of wheels will find that Cheltenham and Gloucestershire is easy to travel around by car, with plenty of centrally located car parks. The A40 to Oxford and London is also nearby.

Buses and Coaches

National Express bus transport is on hand in Cheltenham, along with Castleways Coaches and Pulham's Coaches, travelling to Broadway (45 minutes - stopping at Winchcombe), Cirencester (30 minutes), Gloucester (30 minutes), London (two and three quarter hours), Moreton (one hour - stopping at Bourton and Stow) and Oxford (one and a quarter hours). Around town, buses run into the centre and link the main places of interest.

Trains

Cheltenham is well connected to the world of rail transport, with the town's spa train station being conveniently situated on the Bristol to Birmingham line. Therefore, the town offers an array of day trip possibilities by rail, with destinations including Bath (one hour), Bristol (45 minutes), Gloucester (ten minutes) and London (two and a half hours). Trains from Cheltenham also travel to and from Cardiff, Derby, Plymouth and Swindon, while there is a further station next to the Racecourse - a part of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway network.

Taxis

Taxis are available around Cheltenham and can be found gathered outside of the train station and the main hotels. Alternatively, most people choose to arrange taxis over the telephone, with a choice of 24-hour private taxis firms and minicabs being on hand, such as Central Taxis on the Royal Well Road, and AP Taxis on Pennsylvania Avenue.
