Coastal view of IlfracombeAround Lynton and Lynmouth are many appealing day trips and outlying attractions, which are based throughout North Devon and the Exmoor National Park. Easterly excursions to Porlock and Watchet are always popular, where deep-sea fishing boats regularly depart and often get booked up.

Further to the east of Lynton and Lynmouth is the coastal town of Minehead, which is a rather brash seaside resort, filled with all of the usual beach-related attractions, such as sailing, wind surfing, links golf and traditional amusements. However, one of Minehead's most famous attractions is its Butlin's Holiday Park, which contributes greatly to the town's seasonal popularity.

General Information

As the biggest seaside attraction in North Devon, the town of Ilfracombe features a charming little harbour and is just a half hour drive from Lynton and Lynmouth, lying approximately 29 km / 18 miles to the west. The beachfront of Ilfracombe is quite pleasant, while the Chambercombe Manor is particularly noteworthy here and dates from the 11th century. For better beaches, do consider heading further west, to Woolacombe - or for something a bit more unusual, take a boat trip from Ilfracombe to Lundy Island, to see the resident puffin colony.

If you find yourself looking for attractions on a larger scale, then the university city of Exeter is to be found some 88 km / 55 miles to the south of Lynton and Lynmouth and famed for its cathedral, guildhall, medieval churches, theatre attractions and shops. At just over 64 km / 40 miles to the south-east of Lynton and Lynmouth, the towns of Taunton and Bridgwater are popular destinations, with Taunton being known for its shopping scene and Bridgwater famous for its Guy Fawkes Carnival each November.

Further tourist attractions surrounding Lynton and Lynmouth include the charming and exceedingly picturesque fishing town of Clovelly, which dates from the 14th century and is close to Bideford, being some 64 km / 40 miles to the south-west. En route, consider stopping off at Barnstaple, which is a sizeable North Devon market town, next to the landscaped attractions at Marwood Gardens. Hartland Point is also close to Clovelly, as is Braunton Burrows, which is regarded by many to be an area of extreme natural beauty.
