Photo of picturesque CopenhagenThe island of Funen is filled with interesting attractions and tourist destinations, all of which are within easy reach of Odense, such as the neighbouring town of Nyborg and its imposing historical fortress of Nyborg Slot. Also close to Odense and on the far easterly tip of Denmark's Jutland peninsula are the appealing and historic attractions of Fredericia.

Denmark's capital city of Copenhagen is also within reach of Odense and here you will find some of the very best attractions in the whole country, while the city of Aarhus is perfect for those interested in Danish Viking heritage. The Vikinge Museet is a particularly interesting museum in Aarhus and displays a range of artefacts found after excavating an ancient Viking village on this very site in the 1960s.

Modern view of Copenhagen

Copenhagen

The Danish capital of Copenhagen is just about close enough to Odense for a day trip, if you leave early in the morning, lying around 167 km / 104 miles east of the city. Copenhagen can be easily reached in under two hours, and once there, tourist will be treated to attractions such as Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Castle, the Gentofte Beaches, Kobenhavns Zoo and the extremely popular Tivoli Amusement Park, where the wooden roller coaster is a particular favourite for many. However, away from the city centre and next to the Churchill Park harbour, is the Little Mermaid that often attracts some of the largest crowds.

Aarhus

The second-largest city in the whole of Denmark, a trip to Aarhus should feature strongly on the itinerary of anyone wishing to explore the main Danish attractions. Aarhus is located approximately 146 km / 91 miles to the north of Odense and is a vibrant university city, with many central museums, such as the Den Gamle By, an outstanding open-air museum with almost 80 different restored buildings moved from all over Denmark, then carefully rebuilt and restored.

Scene of Fredericia

Fredericia

Within easy striking distance of Odense, Fredericia is roughly 56 km / 35 miles to the north-west, meaning that on a good day the travel time will be under an hour. Fredericia is an especially small industrial city dating from the middle of the 17th century. The Fredericia Fortress and is ramparts remain in good order and are amongst the main attractions here, along with the Fredericia Museum on the Jernbanegade, which displays an array of local civilian historic exhibits and is just minutes away from the railway station.

Langeland

A lengthy, narrow island known for its many sandy beaches and popular cycle paths, Langeland can be found some 63 km / 39 miles south of Odense and is connected to both Svendborg and Tasinge by the Langeland Bridge. Other attractions on the island include a number of small farming villages, several pretty windmills, many local handicraft shops, plenty of historic buildings in the main town of Rudkobing, and also the rather splendid medieval fortress at Tranekaer.

View from Nyborg

Nyborg

The most easterly town on the island of Funen, Nyborg is a mere 37 km / 23 miles east of Odense and not to be overlooked. Although many visitors simply notice its rather imposing and industrial harbourfront, look a little deeper and you will discover a number of more appealing attractions buried beneath the exterior of Nyborg, such as the rather beautiful Vot Frue Kirke church on the Gammel Torv, the half-timbered house known as the Mads Lerches Gard on the Slotsgade, and the nearby fortress of Nyborg Slot, much of which remains and dates from the 12th century.
