The climate in Odense is typically Danish in character and quite similar to that in nearby Copenhagen, with pleasantly warm summers and winters that are far from being harsh. From December to February, the temperatures by day stay just a few degrees above freezing, but by the time that April has arrived, both Odense and the island of Funen as a whole really awakens from its winter slumber.

The summer season in Odense is long and stretches from late May, right up to the end of September. The peak of the tourist season is in July and August, when the climate is influenced by the strong summer weather and sees highs approaching 25°C / 77°F. However, some rainy spells at this time of the year in Odense are to be expected on occasion, and conversely some periods of drought.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

A wealth of outdoor celebrations take place around Funen's coastline and close to Odense in the summer, with concerts being staged and attraction hours lengthened. Copenhagen is also at its busiest during this season and many day trippers visit this city to enjoy its regular festivities and open-air events.

By late August, the climate in Odense is at its warmest, although the tourist levels start to fall slowly. Autumn weather is quite short lived in Odense and merges into the late summer season. Towards the end of October and the beginning of November, the most definite change in temperature can be felt at night, when a heavy coat or jacket is an absolute must. However, the Christmas period is warmed up by the plentiful mulled wine, known locally in Denmark as 'Glögg'.
