(Limassol, Cyprus)

Esplanade imageThere are a variety of Cypriot transport options to choose between in Limassol, with buses being a useful and inexpensive way to travel between coastal tourist resorts. Holiday makers often choose to hire their very own set of wheels, with rental cars and scooters providing a great way to travel around, outside of Limassol.

However, do bear in mind that it you have a rental car, the streets around central Limassol and the beachfront can become quite congested. Alternatively, private taxi transportation and shared service taxis offer a further way to travel between beaches and places of interest.

There may well be no airport actually located within Limassol, but the city itself is conveniently situated part-way between the island's two biggest. Both Larnaca International Airport (north-east) and Paphos International Airport (west) are approximately 70 km / 43 miles from Limassol and connected by bus transport, private and service taxis, and self-drive hire cars. Larnaca Airport is the more prominent of the two and serves as the main entry point into Cyprus, offering the most extensive selection of airlines. However, airlines such as British Airways, Cyprus Airways, Eurocypria, Thomas Cook and Thomson Airways are all well represented at both facilities. In central Limassol, an office of Cyprus Airways is to be found on the Leoforos Arhiepiskopou Makariou III.

Car Rental

You really do need your own personal transport if you intend to get out and explore the region surrounding Limassol properly, and hire cars in Cyprus are generally quite affordable and good value for money. Car rental offices are located at both Larnaca and Paphos airports, as well as within the city of Limassol. Local Cypriot companies, such as Astra Self Drive Cars, tend to provide the cheapest packages. Scooters are also popular, readily available and extremely inexpensive to hire. When travelling around Limassol by car or scooter, bear in mind that the beachfront is always a good point of reference. For sheer convenience, nothing quite compares to taxi transport in Limassol. Although taxis may well be plentiful, it is fair to say that they are also quite expensive, being used mainly for local journeys. Service taxis tend to offer the best value and travel between Larnaca, Lefkosia and Paphos. Transport costs can be reduced by passengers sharing the taxis, especially the larger 'dolmus' taxis.

Boats and Ferries

Throughout the year, a variety of two-day and three-day cruise packages travel from Limassol, setting sail for international destinations such as Haifa in Israel, Port Said in Egypt and some of the main islands of Greece. Tickets for these excursions are available at all good travel agencies. Those with their own yacht may well like to moor it at the St. Raphael Marina, on the city's outskirts.
