Central view of fountainThere are many different places in Marrakech where visitors can come to appreciate Moroccan art. The Matisse Art Gallery is one of the foremost galleries within Marrakech and showcases both local Moroccan and international artists alike.

The Museum of the Friends of Marrakech is home to a selection of notable art galleries, with both the Fondation Culturelle Dar Bellarj and the Institut Francais often being of interest. Another place where you can often enjoy art appreciation and a range of cultural activities is at the recently completed Théâtre Royal on the Boulevard Mohamed VI, which is an especially stylish building featuring a large dome and outdoor amphitheatre area, appearing much older than its youthful age.

This fine museum and exotic garden was designed French painter, Jacques Majorelle, who used to live in Marrakech. Cacti, bougainvillea and palm trees blend well with the garden's water features. Meanwhile, the associated museum features many items of Morocco, including collections of pottery, carpets, and Berber and Tuareg jewellery.

Museum of the Friends of Marrakech

The Museum of the Friends of Marrakech is another of the city's converted 19th century mansions which has been put to good use. There is a fine courtyard, complete with a bathhouse that is surrounded by galleries which display local works. You can also see many fine examples of jewellery, ceramics and clothing, while temporary art exhibitions are also popular here.

Fondation Culturelle Dar Bellarj

The Fondation Culturelle Dar Bellarj actively promotes regional Moroccan art with a series of ever changing exhibits. Conveniently close to the Médersa Ben Youssef, the Fondation Culturelle Dar Bellarj contains a collection of art works, which often include paintings by local up-and-coming artists. This attraction offers a pleasant way to spend a spare hour or two if you are in the vicinity.

Institut Francais (French Institute)

Standing alongside the Lycée Victor Hugo, the ever-popular Institut Francais has long been the city's leading cultural institution and boasts a variety of different entertainment, which comes in the form of exhibitions of modern art and photos, theatrical performances and even a number of regular concerts. Also on offer at the Marrakech Institut Francais is a cinema, with regular screenings of arty movies.

Matisse Art Gallery

A prominent modern art gallery which has been leading the city's art scene since it first opened in 1999, the Matisse Art Gallery is located along the Passage Ghandouri, where it is spread over two floors. Containing a wealth of Moroccan paintings and contemporary sculptures, the Matisse Art Gallery attracts many leading artists from all over Morocco who regularly exhibit their works here. Magazines and gifts are also available here, on the lower floor, while the upper space is where the main collection resides.
