Getting Around, Cheyenne Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Cheyenne, Wyoming - WY, USA)

Finding your way around the city of Cheyenne is far from being difficult, thanks to the reliable public transport that is on offer. For short distances in the summer months, you may simply prefer to travel about by bicycle, or if you are based in the downtown district, you can cover a lot of ground on foot, with the principal attractions, restaurants and shops being conveniently close to centrally located accommodation.

If you prefer to do things at your own pace, then hiring a car is most likely to best suit your travel needs, particularly if you intend to head outside of the state capital. However, do bear in mind that the roads in Wyoming can become icy during the winter months, with some snow at times.

Cheyenne Transit provides extensive coverage of Laramie County with its mass transportation, meaning that it is simple to travel outside of Cheyenne by bus, to nearby towns and destinations such as Albin, Burns, Carpenter, Granite, Hillsdale, Horse Creek, Meriden, Pine Bluffs, Ranchettes and South Greeley.

Cheyenne does boasts its own small regional airport, which is served by Great Lakes Airlines (flights to Denver and Worland), although the services are very limited and most people therefore tend to arrive via the Denver International Airport, which is only just over 100 miles / 161 km away and to the south. From Denver Airport, Cheyenne is easy to reach by following Highway US-470 and then Interstate I-25 all the way.

Denver's international airport is enormous and always extremely busy, handling up to one million travelers each week of the year. Therefore, as you would expect, the ground transportation on offer is very comprehensive, ranging from bus, coach and shuttle transport, to taxis and car hire. Greyhound buses travel to Denver's main bus station, from where you can catch another bus to Cheyenne. Alternatively, small 15-seater planes often fly directly to the Cheyenne Regional Airport, although turbulence may be an issue for some passengers.

Car Rental

Driving around Cheyenne is not particularly difficult, since this is not a large city. If you have opted for a hire car as your chosen method of transport, then you may like to consider exploring the southeastern corner of Wyoming, and possibly crossing the state border into neighboring Colorado, via Interstate I-25 or Highway US-85. The I-25 also heads northwards, while the I-80 travels eastwards into Nebraska, and westwards all the way to Utah, where Salt Lake City is approximately 440 miles / 708 km away.

A local bus service is provided by the Cheyenne Transit Program (CTP) and runs every day except for Sundays. There are six fixed-bus routes, including connections to the Bishop Boulevard, the Community College, the Dell Range Boulevard, the Frontier Mall and the Storey Boulevard. There is also a downtown loop, which travels between the principal buildings and tourist attractions.

For long-distance travel outside of Cheyenne, Greyhound buses depart from the station on Walker Road.

Taxis

Since Cheyenne is not exactly a big state capital, taxis are the perfect transport option for getting around the city, especially if you aren't near a bus stop or are needing to travel in the evening or later. Taxis often simply ask for a minimal fare for any destination in the entire city within 5 miles / 8 km, meaning that your charges are fixed before you depart. Popular local firms include:
