Cheyenne Landmarks and Monuments

(Cheyenne, Wyoming - WY, USA)

The principal sights, monuments and most notable landmarks of Cheyenne are varied to say the least. A number of the grandest buildings were once the homes of wealthy cattle barons, at the time when this was the nation's most affluent city, per capita.

In total there are more than 50 different structures in Cheyenne that now appear on the National Register of Historical Places, such as the Atlas Theatre, the First United Methodist Church, the Historic Governors' Mansion, the Historic Plains Hotel and St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral.

Forming the centerpiece to the city is the extremely grand and imposing State Capitol Building, which makes a very obvious appearance on the skyline of Cheyenne and has been listed as a National Historic Landmark since the year 1987. This palatial structure was built between 1886 and 1890 at the cost of some US$150,000, and is known for its elegant Renaissance Revival architecture.

Another centrally located landmark of note in downtown Cheyenne is the Historic Governors' Mansion on East 21st Street, which was called home by the governors of Wyoming right after its completion in 1904, up until the year 1976. The mansion made an appearance on the National Register of Historic Places in the late 1960s and although it is no longer used by the state governors, it does still function as an important city attraction. Visitors are able to explore many of the elaborately decorated rooms representing different decades, with guided tours often being available. The front elevation is particularly striking, with its ornate portico supported by four large fluted columns. Interestingly, Wyoming has often been known for its somewhat laid-back approach to life and this is very much reflected here, since the building itself has never been enclosed by a fenced boundary and has always been rather relaxed when it comes to security.
