Getting Around, Stockton Travel and Transport

(Stockton, California - CA, USA)

Being located on the northern side of California means that Stockton does lend itself to day trips to some major 'nearby' tourist destinations, such as Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose, as well as the vineyards of Napa Valley, to the northwest. However, if you plan to travel outside of the city, you will find that a rental car is a very convenient transport choice.

Stockton's Metropolitan Airport is a rather small and low-key facility. It sits just over 5 miles / 8 km to the south of the city center and is therefore easy to travel to and from.

Public transport in Stockton comes in the form of citywide buses and popular downtown trolleys, while the city is also served by frequent Amtrak trains. Taxis in the city are easy to come by and are really best suited for short hops between the principal sites, hotels and shopping centers.

There is currently only one airline based at the Stockton Metropolitan Airport, namely Allegiant Air, which travels to Las Vegas on a regular basis and also offers seasonal flights between Honolulu, Hawaii. If you are in need of a larger international airport, then consider the airports based in Sacramento (58 miles / 93 km to the north) and San Francisco (80 miles / 129 km to the west), both of which are on a much larger scale and feature comprehensive ground transportation options.

Car Rental

Hire cars will very quickly prove to be good value for money, particularly since there are numerous freeways, interstates and state routes close by, meaning that even potentially lengthy journeys can be surprisingly quick on these fast routes. In particular, Interstate I-5 (West Side Freeway) travels in a southwards direction, all the way to Los Angeles, some 330 miles / 531 km away. Much closer to the city of Stockton is Sacramento, which is also connected by the I-5, although is sited to the north.

Buses

Regional transit is available all around the city of Stockton, thanks to the presence of San Joaquin RTD Express bus transport, as well as the downtown trolleys.

Trains

There are two centrally located railway stations based in Stockton, with the main train station being found on South San Joaquin Street and serviced by regular Amtrak train transport. The secondary Robert J. Cabral Station stands on East Channel Street, just over a mile to the north, where it is used by both Amtrak and ACE Rail trains.

Taxis

If you are planning to travel further than just a short distance, then the cost of taxi transport can prove to be a little prohibitive, unless it is possible to share your ride with other like-minded travelers. Popular taxi companies in the city include Dependable Stockton Taxi Cabs (tel: +1 209 598 8003) and John's Taxis (tel: +1 209 684 2905).
