Stockton Landmarks and Monuments

(Stockton, California - CA, USA)

As the county seat of San Joaquin, the city of Stockton is an attractive city, with a number of its finest landmarks to be found lining the main waterfront.

Located a few blocks north of Weber Square and founded here at the end of the year 1942, the Cathedral of the Annunciation serves as the seat of the Diocese of Stockton. Beneath the Gothic-style red-brick facade lies a surprisingly modern reinforced concrete structure, which is somewhat dominated by a belfry tower measuring roughly 28 metres / 92 feet in height. Inside, an impressive vaulted ceiling is accompanied by a polished terrazzo floor.

The spreading campus of the San Joaquin Delta College contains a series of important local landmarks and lies on the northwestern side of Stockton, alongside the Weberstown Mall and the Sherwood Mall shopping centers.

Established in the middle of the 1930s, the college campus now covers an area of more than 70 hectares / 173 acres and is home to the Delta Center for the Arts (incorporating the Warren Atherton Auditorium and the LH Horton Jr Gallery), Danner Hall and an extensive sports complex, complete with an enormous Olympic-sized open-air swimming pool named the June Fergusson Pool. Of interest, the San Joaquin Delta College featured heavily as a location in Walt Disney's successful 1970s movie, 'The World's Greatest Athlete'.

Another important educational landmark in the city of Stockton is the University of the Pacific, which stands just over 1.5 miles / 2 km to the south of the San Joaquin Delta College and is bounded by North Pacific Avenue, being intersected by the Calaveras River. This university was founded at the start of the 1850s and is now called home by over 6,000 students (undergraduates and postgraduates combined).

Notable attractions within the campus of the University of the Pacific include the Alan and Olive Gardemeyer Field, the Alex G. Spanos Center, the Brookside Field, the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts, the Morris Chapel, the Pacific Theater Arts Department, the Southwest Lawn and the William Knox Holt Memorial Library.
