Stockton Museums and Art Galleries

(Stockton, California - CA, USA)

There are just a few principal museums and notable galleries to see in the city of Stockton, suiting tourists looking to learn about Californian history, regional artists and the city's interesting maritime heritage.

A very good first port of call is the Haggin Museum on North Pershing Avenue, which resides on the western side of downtown Stockton and within Victory Park. The Haggin serves as a museum of both local history and art, and was established towards the end of the 1920s. Many works by famous artists of the 19th and 20th centuries are exhibited here, including acclaimed French artists Jean Béraud (1849 to 1935), William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825 to 1905), Jean-Léon Gérome (1824 to 1904) and also Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 to 1919).

Particularly interesting and important at the Haggin are the landscape oil paintings by German-American artist Albert Bierstadt (1830 to 1902), a number of which depict famous Californian scenes, such as 'Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains' and 'Looking Down Yosemite Valley'.

Families may like to consider spending an hour or two at the waterfront Children's Museum of Stockton on West Weber Avenue, which is to be found close to the Weber Point Events Center and McLeod Lake, and opened here in the spring of 1994. There are countless engaging activities and hands-on exhibits awaiting younger visitors, spread around themed areas such as the Art Studio, Build It Derby, Conservation Cottage, Magical Mirrors, Recycling and Valley Farms. Children are also able to play inside a real-life ambulance, bus, helicopter and police car, all of which are parked safely inside.

Situated on the northern side of Stockton and roughly in the direction of the Oakmoore Golf Course is the Stockton Historical Maritime Museum on Cherokee Road, which opened its doors as recently as 2010. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the city's past maritime industry, from the 19th century onwards. All kinds of ships were once built in the dockyards of Stockton and at its peak during the Second World War, the city's ship building industry employed over 30,000 people in order to meet heavy demands for military vessels.
