Located within the Central Valley region of California, directly to the east of both San Francisco and Oakland, the city of Stockton lies to the south of Sacramento. Of interest, the city is actually equidistant between the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the coastline of the Pacific Ocean.

Stockton officially resides in the San Joaquin Valley area and actually functions as the seat for the county of Sao Joaquin. The city comes with a population of just over 300,000 people, making it currently rank as the 13th-biggest city in California, in terms of populous. However, in terms of actual size, Stockton is only the 17th-biggest city in California.

The city is known for its busy inland natural port, with maps clearly showing how this important waterway ultimately links with the ocean itself.

Numerous boundaries divide the city of Stockton into a series of different neighborhoods, a number of which have gained their names from their actual geographical situation, such as Midtown West, North, Northeast, Northwest, East, South, Southeast, Southwest and West Stockton.

Other notable neighborhoods include Akers, Brookside, the Civic District, Colonial Heights, Elkhorn, Fremont Park, the Lincoln Village, McKinley Park, Ponce de Leon, Seaport, Stonewood, University Park, Valley Oak and Weberstown, as well as the downtown district.
