The city's coastline is a major draw card, together with the plentiful sunshine and many beach resorts.
A good choice of hotels are available along the coastline, a number of which offer unbeatable views across the curving Bahia de Banderas.
Outdoor swimming pools are always popular in this part of Mexico, even though the ocean is often just a matter of minutes away. Holiday makers generally favour the privacy, convenience and facilities associated within these resort complexes.
The seaside walkway better known as the Malecon is located within the main downtown district and is regularly frequented by both locals and tourists alike, who come here to enjoy a stroll and to admire the local Mexican artists showcasing their paintings.
Many visitors to the city head down to the Malecon each evening, to enjoy the breathtaking sunsets reflecting in the bay waters. Walking tours of the city take in sights along the Malecon and nearby.
As well as impressive shoreline views and coastal scenery, the Malecon is also known for its extremely stylish modern sculptures. These art works are of a large scale and designed to be experienced close-up, being extremely tactile and often doubling up as a comfortable place to sit down. The most notable sculptures have been created by leading Latin American artists, such as Alejandro Colunga, Ramiz Barquet and Sergio Bustamante.
The Malecon of Puerto Vallarta has been a popular attraction for many years, although in 2002, it needed serious renovation work, following damage from Hurricane Kenna. Much photographed are the arches and sculptures.
Some of the most popular beaches are to be found on the northerly side of the city and within the Zona Hotelera, which is better known to tourists as the Hotel Zone.
The most desirable hotels are just a short walk away from the beaches, although bear in mind that during the high season (December and April), prices do tend to rocket, as demand begins to increase.
Many resorts in Puerto Vallarta are based along the coastline and feature their own outdoor swimming pools and gardens.
The architecture of the city is quite varied, comprising a diverse mixture of historical structures and more modern high-rise hotels.
