Known for its scenic location on the south-westerly side of Lake Geneva (Lac de Genève), the Swiss city of Geneva can be found within the Romandy language region, in western Switzerland. Geneva is a vast city and home to a population of approximately 200,000 people, making it amongst Switzerland's most densely populated cities.

The very heart of Geneva is based around the shores of the lake and is divided by the winding Rhône River. Slightly to the north, the Gare de Cornavin railway station is a notable point of reference and usually clearly indicated on most city maps.


Maps and Orientation of the City

On the southern banks of the Rhône River you will discover Geneva's Old Town district (Vieille Ville), where the vehicle-free Grand Rue forms an important thoroughfare. Many of the city's main cultural attractions and museums are situated around this part of Geneva, while to the north, the Jet d'Eau fountain is one of the city's most iconic landmarks.

The Gare des Eaux Vives railway station stands on the eastern side of Old Town Geneva and is operated by the SCNF French railway network, linking much of south-eastern France. Nearby, the Rue du Rhône has become the city's premier shopping district.
