No trip to Sweden could really ever be considered to be complete without first visiting the attractions within the city of Stockholm, which are close to Uppsala and amongst the very best that the country has to offer, including a wealth of fortresses, castles and palaces, such as the Drottningholms Slott, the Rosendal Slott and the Tullgarns Slott.

Also near to Uppsala are the numerous attractions within Osthammar, which include a number of extremely noteworthy seafood restaurants, often boasting scenic vistas across the waterfront. Also nearby and situated next to Lake Mälaren, within the province known as Västmanland, Västeras is filled with cobbled streets and a jumble of picture-postcard houses, and is actually the sixth-largest city in the whole of Sweden.

Stockholm

Since this Swedish capital is a mere 69 km / 43 miles south of Uppsala, it is an extremely popular day trip and ideal if you plan to tour the eastern side of Sweden, and the Uppland and Södermanland provinces. Within Stockholm, make time to visit the historic Old Town area of Gamla Stan, which is centred around the Stortorget public square. Drottningholm Palace is yet another highlight in Stockholm, along with the Royal Palace (Stockholms Slott), the National Museum of Fine Arts, and cruises around Lake Malar (Malaren).

Norrtälje

A small town some 72 km / 45 miles north-east of Uppsala, Norrtälje is home to a population of around 17,000 people and is considered to be part of the Stockholm County. The main attractions tend to be based around the waterfront and Norrtälje harbour, where a number of restaurants and hotels enjoy excellent views. Head here to pay a visit to the acclaimed Pythagoras Mechanical Workshop Museum, or simply explore the neighbouring islands.

Osthammar

The town of Osthammar is around 67 km / 41 miles north-east of Uppsala and can be reached in approximately one hour by road. Situated within the historic Roslagen region and featuring a population of less than 5,000 residents, many people choose to visit Osthammar to enjoy its relax atmosphere, scenic coastline and lively summer music festival. The Osthammar Tourist Office can be found on the Stangorsgatan and is always a good place to begin your visit.

Västeras

Around 130,000 Swedes currently call the city of Västeras their home, which is famed for its rich Viking heritage and is amongst Sweden's most historic cities. Attractions in Västeras are around 78 km / 48 miles south-west of Uppsala and include an impressive collection of art works at the Konstmuseum on the Fiskatorget, the 12th-century Domkyrkan (cathedral) and the many surrounding pre-Christian sites, such as the Anundshög and the Badelunda Church.
