Lanzarote Shopping and Districts
(Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain)
Although most people visit Lanzarote to enjoy the hot weather and sandy beaches, the island also features excellent shopping facilities and local shops. Many of the best districts in Lanzarote can be found in the Arrecife area - around the Calle Leon Y Castillo (Calle Real), the Puerto Del Carmen - particularly at the Biosfera Shopping Centre, and at the outstanding Deiland Centre in the Playa Honda resort.
Also known throughout the island of Lanzarote for its range of shops, the Costa Teguise contains a cluster of shops along the Playa de las Cucharas, while the Playa Blanca also features a number of notable shopping districts and outdoor markets. Much of Lanzarote and the other Canary Islands offer a range of duty-free goods, with alcohol, cigarettes, perfumes and cosmetics noticeably cheaper than the rest of mainland Spain.
Shopping hours in Lanzarote tend to start at around 09:30, with the greater part of shops closing for a customary siesta in the afternoon, when the weather is at its hottest. Shops then reopen at approximately 16:00 and continue trading until 20:00 or later. Large shops and supermarkets often stay open throughout the day, from around 09:00 to 18:00, while most of the shops stay closed all day on Sundays, with only a small selection of shops opening in the island's main tourist resorts.
Shops and Shopping Centres
Known for being Lanzarote's commercial capital, Arrecife is home to a plethora of shopportunities, with many high-street favourites and fashion stores with designer labels. The main shopping areas in Arrecife include the streets of Calle José Antonio, Canalejas and Fajardo, with the highest concentration of shops along the Calle León y Castillo, which is known locally as the Calle Real. Further stores and gift shops can be found along Arrecife's main promenade area.
A major resort on the island, the Playa Blanca is known for its extensive selection of shops and restaurants, with the most notable shopping districts in this area being local along the Calle Limones street, lining the promenade and at the Papagayo Centre.
The Playa Honda area of Lanzarote is home to one of the island's largest shopping centres, the Deiland. Here you will find an extensive selection of shops, facilities and eateries, together with a popular cinema.
Puerto del Carmen
Offering an enormous selection of fashion boutiques and local shops, the Puerto del Carmen is one of the island's largest and most popular resorts. The best shopping in Puerto del Carmen is located along the main artery of the Avenida de las Playas, where many cheap goods can be found, although do be cautious of counterfeit items. Biosfera Centre is without doubt the highlight for shopahaolics visiting this part of Lanzarote, containing several floors of shops, boutiques, cafés and entertainment options. Further notable shopping centres in Puerto del Carmen can be found along the Playa de los Pocillos area, including the Centro Comercial Pocillos and the Costa Mar and Jameos.
Costa Teguise has long been a popular part of Lanzarote and many of the best shops are concentrated along the Playa de las Cucharas, selling a range of goods and clothing. The Las Cucharas Commercial Centre is also worthy of a mention and offers a range of inexpensive electrical items. For more traditional Spanish shopping in the Costa Teguise, head to the bustling craft market which is held in the Pueblo Marinero on Friday evenings, with many additional shops situated nearby. The Teguise area also features a major open-air market on Sunday mornings - between 08:30 to 14:00, which is the perfect place to find an array of bargains and Lanzarote souvenirs.
