Cork Airport (ORK) Information
(Cork, County Cork, Republic of Ireland)
Set along the far southern coastline of the
Republic of Ireland, Cork Airport is now one of the four busiest air hubs in the country, serving between two and three million passengers every year. The main full-service carrier at the airport, which opened in 1961, is Aer Lingus. This airline offers flights to
London,
Paris,
Brussels,
Amsterdam and
Rome, as well as seasonal hops to
Tenerife,
Lisbon, Palma,
Gran Canaria and other Mediterranean beach destinations.
The remainder of the carriers operating here are budget airlines, with Ryanair at the forefront, offering cheap flights to London,
Liverpool and southern European resorts. Thomson Airways operates seasonal charter flights, while the airport also serves as a major southern Ireland hub for general aviation and private flights. Flight schools offering courses in both fixed and rotary wing piloting take place here and ground handling for business jets forms an important part of the overall revenue.
Cork Airport's modern single terminal opened in 2006, following the construction of an onsite hotel. At the same time, access roads were upgraded to dual-carriageway and a multi-storey car park was erected for short-stay users, with further development following in recent years.
