Getting Around, Lubeck Travel, Transport and Car Rental

Central Lubeck is eminently walkable, particularly around the historic Altstadt district and along the Königstrasse. However, those in a hurry will find plenty of bus transport and taxis on hand all over Lubeck, allowing you to travel to your destination with relative ease.
Worth noting for motorists, vehicular access to much of Old Town Lubeck is restricted between the hours of 11:30 and 18:00 Monday to Friday, and also from 10:00 on Saturdays, although hotel guests are exempt. Lubeck's main public transport is shown here.

Often referred to as Lubeck Blankensee Airport (Flughafen Lübeck Blankensee), Lubeck Airport lies around 8 km / 5 km to the south of the city and is well linked by a range of public transport. Ryanair is a particularly notable airline at the airport and many people flying in by Ryanair often use the airport's shuttle bus transport to travel to nearby
Hamburg, a journey of around one hour.
Car Rental
Renting a car is often the preferred mode of transport for those arriving at the nearby Lubeck Airport, providing much freedom and convenience. Those who wish to travel outside of Lubeck and explore Germany's Schleswig-Holstein area will find a good network of roads. The A1 links the city of Hamburg, while the B206 connects Bad Segeberg, and the B207 allows you to travel to Ratzeburg with relative ease.
Trains
Lubeck train transport provides a fast way to travel to many major cities around Germany, with popular locations including Kiel (one hour and 30 minutes), Rostock (two hours) and also Hamburg (around 45 minutes). The Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station) lies close to the very heart of the city, being just a short walk from the centre of the historic Altstadt district. Worth noting, a line travels to neighbouring Travemunde, where three separate train stations await, the Bahnhof Skandinavienkai, Hafenbahnhof and also the Strandbahnhof, which is located next to the beachfront itself.
Buses and Coaches
Regional bus transport is available in Lubeck, arriving and departing on the Hansestrasse, close to the Hauptbahnhof, including Autokraft buses, which travel to Hamburg, Kiel and also
Berlin. Local city buses are a cheap way to travel around much of Lubeck and the city bus station stands on the eastern side of the Hauptbahnhof. From here, regular buses travel to the airport every 20 minutes during the day.
Boats and Ferries
Various car and passenger ferry services travel to and from the neighbouring seaside resort of Travemunde. The main destinations include cities within both Sweden and Finland.
