Aerial cityscsape photoIf you need to travel just a short distance in Jodhpur, then the city's speedy three-wheeler auto rickshaws offer convenient transportation, although do be sure to negotiate the fare before you step in. For transport a little slower and less chaotic, then Jodhpur's horse and carriages (tongas) offer a very pleasant and relaxing way to travel around, being especially appealing to tourists.

Local buses are operated by the Rajasthan State Transport Corporation (RSTC) and are perfect for tourists wishing to make the most of their time in India and travel to nearby cities. Alternatively, the train network around Jodhpur is on hand, quickly connecting cities such as Jaisalmer.

Jodhpur Airport (JDH) / Arriving by Air

Located on the south-easterly outskirts of the city, Jodhpur Airport is especially close to the Jai Narain Vyas University. Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines all serve the airport, flying to cities throughout India, such as Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Mumbai, New Delhi and also Udaipur. Bus transport, auto rickshaws and tourist cabs (taxis) and all on hand to whisk you into the nearby city centre.

Car Rental

Driving around Jodhpur and the outlying Rajasthan area is not difficult and renting a car is the preferred mode of transport for many a holidaymaker. Hire cars offer a good way to explore the narrow lanes around the inner walled city, with various international rental companies being situated at the airport.

Buses and Coaches

Bus transport is on hand in the city of Jodhpur and provides an easy way to travel to many surrounding Indian cities and tourist destinations. RSTC buses operate on a regular basis and travel to Ahmedabad (11 hours), Ajmer (four and a half hours), Bikaner (five and a half hours), Jaipur (seven and a half hours), Jaisalmer (just over five hours), New Delhi (13 hours), and also Udaipur (just over five hours). Private bus transport is also available, with offices being located across from the railway station and close to the Ranchodji Temple.

Trains

The Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Express Train departs every night at around 23:00 and arrives in Jaisalmer some six hours later, and vice versa. Rail transport is the most comfortable and fastest way to cover long distances, with further popular routes including the Mandore Express to New Delhi, and the Intercity Express to Jaipur. A fully computerised booking office is on Station Road, near to the Sojati Gate, and is open on a daily basis.
