Jodhpur Shopping and Districts

(Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India)

Picture of market and wandering cowAll kinds of appealing Rajasthani handicrafts can be purchased when shopping in the city, with many popular bazaars being based around the Sojati Gate and the Sadar Market area. However, Jodhpur is perhaps best known for its extensive selection of Indian antiques stores. Lining the Palace Road and close to both the Umaid Bhawan Palace and the Ajit Bhawan is the biggest cluster of antiques dealers in Jodhpur, although bargains do tend to be in short supply.

Do try to use a little commonsense when shopping in Jodhpur. For example, if a rickshaw driver or friendly hotel receptionist recommends a particular shop to you, there is a very good chance that they will be getting commission! Therefore, it is often simplest just to spend your time window shopping or checking out the most obvious markets yourself.

Where to Shop

The Clock Tower in the city centre is a very good place to begin your shopping and is surrounded by some very colourful and fragrant spice shops, located here to target the very lucrative tourist market. However, they are very convenient outlets if you are in a hurry. Alternatively, head in a westerly direction and check out the Tambaku Bazaar and the nearby Navchokiya area of the Old City, where a number of good spice shops await.

Locals in Jodhpur tend to favour the Nai Sadak street, which serves as a major shopping drag and tends to be flanked with stores selling shoes, Indian saris, souvenirs and art works. Follow your nose and the smell of spices, and after a short stroll you will reach the neighbouring Sardar Market. This major Indian market is always bustling with crowds of excited shoppers, together with the occasional wandering cow.
