Stunning image of the Mehrangarh FortOne of the most famous and iconic landmarks in the whole of Jodhpur, the Mehrangarh Fort is an epic structure and amongst the biggest of all the forts within India. The Mehrangarh Fort stands more than 120 metres / 395 feet above the city and dates as far back as the middle of the 15th century, where it was the official residence of the Maharaja of Jodhpur.

Other very prominent landmarks and sights within the Indian city of Jodhpur include the Umaid Bhawan Palace (Chittar Palace), which is today partially occupied by a descendent of the maharaja, with the remainder operating as a luxury hotel complex, managed by the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces chain. Also keep a look out for the iconic Clock Tower, which rather dominates the Sadar Market area.

Mehrangarh Fort (Majestic Fort)

Many period structures and features comprise to make up this fortress, including the Chamunda Mataji Temple and a series of gateways - the second of which still features historic battle scars from cannonball hits. Audio tours of the Mehrangarh Fort allow international visitors to learn more about the various courtyards, palaces (Moti, Phool Mahal and Sukh) and terracotta architecture.

Umaid Bhawan Palace (Chittar Palace)

Dominating much of southern Jodhpur, the Umaid Bhawan Palace is a breathtaking landmark and holds an important place in Indian history and culture, since this is actually the last great palace to be built in the whole country. Building of the Umaid Bhawan Palace began in the late 1920s and this colossal structure was finally completed in 1944, with more than 3,000 workers being involved in its construction. The palace was built for the Maharaja Umaid Singh, who died soon after its completion.

The city's Clock Tower is one of its most easily found old landmarks and stands in the midst of the busy Sadar Market area, within the Old City. Nearby and to the west, the commercial heart of the city is just a short stroll away, with alleyways and streets connecting various bazaars, antique shops and Indian eateries.

City Universities

Known for its profusion of educational institutions, the city is home to a number of very noteworthy universities and colleges, adding a definite youthful vibe to some neighbourhoods. Of particular prominence is the Jodhpur University (JU), the National Law University (NLU), and also the Jai Narain Vyas University (JNVU), the latter of which is the oldest of the three and was established in 1962.
