Tianjin Hotels and Accommodation

(Tianjin, China)

Photo of the centreTianjin is home to far more hotels than you would probably expect and has plenty of accommodation to choose from.

If you decide not to book ahead of your visit, it is possible to bargain for a guest room in Tianjin, although it is always best to try this at the actual reception desk, rather than over the telephone. Discount rates between 10% and 50% are often available at the last minute, being known in China as 'dazhèkòu'.

Although Tianjin can be busy at times, hotels here rarely operate at full capacity. However, the Chinese holiday periods can be especially hectic times for hotel owners in Tianjin, especially during the first week of both May and October. Advance accommodation reservations may be needed at these times.

When you arrive at your hotel in Tianjin, you will need to show your passport and will also be asked to complete a registration form, where details of your visa will also be required. A deposit will also be necessary upon check-in, payable either by cash or credit card at most hotels. Most mid-range and top-end hotels in Tianjin automatically apply a 15% service charge, which is always worth noting.

Where to Stay

The most popular hotels are situated around the centre of downtown Tianjin, although this convenient location comes at a price. Amongst the best offerings here, the Tianjin First Hotel along Jiefang Beilu is worth searching out and offers mid-range accommodation at a good price. Sited alongside many high-rise skyscrapers and housed in a historic building brimming with old-world character, the guest rooms at the Tianjin First Hotel are especially spacious.

Good budget options in the city include accommodation at the Tianjin University, off Beiyang Dao and close to a lake, with further rooms available close to the main gate. Slightly more upmarket are a selection of guesthouses around the Nankai University complex on Weijin Lu, while the Imperial Palace Hotel on Jiefang Beilu dates back to the early 1920s and price wise is hard to beat.

One of the biggest hotels in the whole of Tianjin, the Grand Hotel can be found along Youji Road in the Hexi neighbourhood, around 3 km / 2 miles outside of the downtown district. With almost 600 guest rooms and conference capabilities for more than 1,000 delegates, Tianjin's Grand Hotel certainly lives up to its name and is always a good option when more central rooms are at a premium.

For luxury accommodation in Tianjin, a few familiar hotel chains present themselves and immediately offer a feeling of opulence and quality. These include the four-star Hyatt Regency, lying next to the Hai River and complete with restaurants and modern amenities, and Tianjin's Sheraton Hotel on Zijinshan Lu, where regular monthly promotions often make accommodation here quite affordable. Another extremely popular luxury hotel is the Tianjin Holiday Inn, which stands proudly along the Zhongshan Lu and is surprisingly upmarket.
