Getting Around, Fort Worth Travel and Transport

If you are intending to travel into this part of Texas by plane, then you will almost certainly be flying into the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Located just over 23 miles / 37 km to the northeast of the city, this major transport hub is by far the busiest of all the airports in Texas, handling some 60 million passengers per annum.

There are certainly numerous public transportation choices in Fort Worth, with a variety of city buses, trolley buses and long-distance coaches on offer. If you do wish to travel into Dallas, then the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) is a particularly popular choice and this interurban train service has been in operation as a commuter line since 1996.

Sightseers in Fort Worth will soon realise that this is an extremely walkable city. In fact, the city has recently appeared within the top 50 most walkable large US cities, being recognised for its extensive efforts to improve overall pedestrianisation.

There are no less than five terminals based at DFW Airport (named A, B, C, D and E), with American Airlines and American Eagle being the two principal airlines in operation. Onsite ground transportation comes in the form of the Trinity Railway Express commuter trains, Dallas Area Rapid Transit buses, rental cars, shared-ride shuttles and taxis.

Car Rental

More and more visitors to Fort Worth are choosing to rent a car upon their arrival at the airport, forgoing public transport in favor of the freedom provided by a hire car. Those driving can make the most of the region's extensive network of freeways and interstates, meaning that you can plan day trips without the need to constantly fit your travel plans around bus timetables.

Interstate I-35 (North-South Freeway) travels right through the core of the city, heading all the way to Oklahoma City (north) and Austin (south). Running east to west is Interstate I-30 (Tom Landry Freeway), which leads to Dallas (east), passing by Arlington, Grand Prairie, Irving and Oak Cliff.

Buses

The Fort Worth Transportation Authority is generally referred to as simply 'The T' and provides citywide buses to all of the principal attractions, such as the Cultural District, the Texas Christian University and the famous Stockyards area. Alternatively, the Molly the Trolley service also offers a cheap and easy way to travel around downtown Fort Worth, suiting those headed to the Stockyards and Sundance Square.

For longer journeys, air-conditioned buses are operated by both Greyhound and Megabus, which between them travel to destinations such as Austin, Houston, Little Rock, Memphis and San Antonio. If you are heading southwards and into Mexico, then you can choose between trans-border bus companies such as Autobus Americanos and Turimex Internacional, based on McCart Avenue and Hemphill Street respectively.

Trains

Amtrak trains regularly service the city of Fort Worth, as part of the Texas Eagle route. This busy and lengthy line travels all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles, stopping off at Fort Worth mid-way through the journey. Further Texan stop-offs located along the Texas Eagle train line include Marshall, Longview, Mineola and Dallas (east), and Cleburne, McGregor, Temple, Taylor, Austin, San Marcos, San Antonio, Del Rio, Sanderson, Alpine and El Paso (south and then west).

Regional rail transport also comes in the form of the considerably shorter Amtrak Heartland Flyer, which travels between Oklahoma City and terminates at Fort Worth. From Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, the train stations are Norman, Purcell, Pauls Valley and Ardmore (in Oklahoma) and Gainesville (in Texas).

Taxis

Taxis are never far from hand in Dallas and Fort Worth, often being used to travel to and from the shared airport. At the airport, taxi drivers will be able to approximate their fares for popular destinations, such as the Fort Worth City Hall and Convention Center, the Northside Stockyards, Arlington City Hall, the Cowboys Stadium (Arlington), Grapevine City Hall, Irving City Hall, Dallas City Hall and Plano City Hall.
