Fort Worth Museums and Art Galleries

(Fort Worth, Texas - TX, USA)

There are certainly numerous museums to be found within the city of Fort Worth, along with an equally plentiful supply of quality art galleries. And with both Dallas and Irving being so close, you don't have far to venture if you wish to tap into further cultural offerings nearby.

Most tourists looking to learn more about the city's rich and interesting heritage will choose to pay a visit to the Stockyards Museum, which is located on East Exchange Avenue, on the northern side of Fort Worth. The Stockyards sits across from the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Cowtown Coliseum, and is just down the road from the attractions of Rodeo Park.

Fort Worth's popular Stockyards Museum occupies the historic Livestock Exchange Building(1902) and opened here in 1989, being established to share its extensive collections and historical archives with members of the general public. These exhibits and collections relate to the city's past livestock industry, the days of cowboys and the American Indians (Kiowa and Comanche tribes). However, the star of the show really does have to be the Palace Theater Bulb, which is currently the world's second longest-running light bulb and has provided electric light continuously for more than a century.

Somewhat more central is the downtown Sid Richardson Museum on Sundance Square, which opened in 1982 and houses many treasures and art works relating to the American West. This attraction currently enjoys annual visitor numbers topping 50,000 people and comprises a mixture of exhibition galleries, educational space and a store.

Art enthusiasts holidaying in this part of Texas may also like to spend time investigating either the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (founded in 1961) on the Camp Bowie Boulevard, or the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (founded in 1892) on Darnell Street. Families may prefer to check out the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History on Gendy Street, located next to the Will Rogers Memorial Center and established in 1945. Permanent exhibits here include multimedia displays, items relating to the Texas cattle industry, a replication of a paleontological dig and various realistic dioramas.
