Being fairly centrally located in New Jersey whilst also being relatively close to the Pennsylvania border, the city of Trenton is certainly well-placed for day trips. There are many outlying attractions just outside of the state capital, along with a number of appealing neighbors.

Some of the most enticing destinations suitable for excursions lie to the southwest of Trenton, often following the line of the Delaware River. These include Levittown, the Florence Township, Bensalem, Cinnaminson, the Pennsauken Township and of course, the metropolis that is Philadelphia.

From Trenton, it is possible to reach the city of Philadelphia in around 45 minutes or thereabouts, with this journey being a little faster by train. Once here, the attractions certainly come thick and fast, with some of the best including the Philadelphia Zoo (near Fairmount Park), as well as the Franklin Institute Science Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, both of which stand on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.


General Information

For the ultimate in day trips from Trenton, do seriously consider an excursion to New York, to the northeast, which is a popular weekend-break destination from New Jersey's state capital. If you are driving to New York, you can reach Manhattan in a little more than an hour, although traffic problems in the center are commonplace. Therefore, catching a train is an easier and less stressful way to reach this iconic city, unless you are a super confident driver.

The attractions in New York are amongst the most famous on the planet and include sights such as the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square and the Whitney Museum of American Art. If you are here from Trenton for just a day, then consider a helicopter ride over Central Park, which will give you some superb bird's eye views of downtown Manhattan.

Somewhat nearer to Trenton and in the same direction as New York are the attractions of Princeton, which is best known for its prestigious university. Strolling around the campus of Princeton University is permitted and there are numerous attractive buildings to be admired, often boasting Gothic-style architecture. Albert Einstein's house on Mercer Road is another must-see attraction here, as its the historic Revolutionary War site now named the Princeton Battlefield.

For something quite different, head eastwards to the beaches of the Jersey Shore. Many of New Jersey's most inviting beaches and resorts are just 45 minutes from Trenton, such as those of Belmar, Point Pleasant and Seaside. Families may also like to take a drive to the Six Flags Great Adventure in the Jackson Township for a memorable day out.
