Trenton Shopping and Districts

(Trenton, New Jersey - NJ, USA)

Although Trenton is the capital of the state, it is fair to say that it is not New Jersey's capital when it comes to shopping. That accolade is held by the state's biggest city - Newark.

That said, there is still a fairly healthy shopping scene present in Trenton, which improves if you are prepared to shop in the surrounding suburbs, such as the Hamilton Township. Keen shoppers will be able to choose between departments stalls, local markets and traditional American strip malls.

The biggest stores and supermarkets are open seven days a week, staying open well into the early hours of the evening most days. For those self-catering or planning a picnic and looking for grocery shopping in Trenton, the Food Bazaar Supermarket on South Clinton Avenue is a popular bet, being open Monday through Sunday, from 07:00 to 22:30. Other reliable choices for groceries include the Mi Tierra Supermarket on Hudson Street, the 7-Eleven on Lalor Street and the Selecto Supermarket on South Broad Street.

Where to Shop

Just over ten minutes to the northeast of downtown Trenton, the Quaker Bridge Mall at the neighboring Lawrence Township is one of the main shopping centers in the region, being reached via the Trenton Freeway (US-1).

Recently renovated in 2012, this substantial shopping mall opened in the mid-1970s and is home to more than 120 stores and eateries, which are spread over two floors and are generally open from 10:00 until 21:00, Monday to Saturday, and on Sundays between the hours of 11:00 and 18:00. The current anchor stores based here include JC Penny, Lord and Taylor, Macy's and Sears. Of note, within close proximity are the Mercer Mall (virtually opposite) and the Lawrence Shopping Center (just down the road), both of which can be reached along the Brunswick Pike.

Located roughly 20 minutes to the east of Trenton and within the Hamilton Township, the Hamilton Marketplace stands just across from the Hilton Garden Inn and also makes for another worthwhile shopping excursion. This shopping complex comes with just over 40 shops, including Barnes and Noble, Kohl's and Walmart.

Head across to Delaware, via the Calhoun Street Bridge, and you will reach the Morrisville Shopping Center, while on the northern side of the city, the Trenton Farmers' Market features some of the freshest produce available in this part of New Jersey. Dozens of local businesses have chosen to base themselves at this marketplace, selling everything from fruit and vegetables, to freshly baked bread, cakes, cheeses, meats, pastries, seafood and hot snacks, as well as jewellery and collectables.
