Atlantic City may seem to be all about casino attractions and it does have more than one or two. However, if you fancy a break from the tables there is much variety in sightseeing on Atlantic City's limits and not far beyond.

The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge offers quiet respite from the Atlantic City area, as does the nearby ancient Renault Winery and historic village of Smithville, while drive a little further and you can be in Philadelphia, the 'City of Brotherly Love'.



Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Brigantine Division

Not far from Atlantic City is the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Brigantine Division, a huge coastal refuge, 10 percent of which is woodland. There are a couple of interesting walking trail attractions through the marshes and woodlands of the refuge - the Leeds Eco-Trail and the shorter Akers Woodland Trail - or you could take a leisurely drive around the 8-mile / 13 km wildlife loop. Among the abundance of wildlife attractions in the refuge are peregrine falcons and bald eagles. The refuge is accessible by taking US highway 30 west and 9 north, from where the Great Creek Road takes you to the gates.

Philadelphia

Renault Winery

The Renault Winery is actually the oldest vineyard in the United States and is located to the west of Atlantic City on US 30 and North Bremen Avenue. The winery was founded as far back as 1864 and attractions include tours of the vineyard where you can sample some of the delicious offerings, a museum, a restaurant and a popular wine café.

Towne of Historic Smithville

Not far from Atlantic City is the charming village of Smithville, which grew from a one-room inn back in the 18th century to a whole village today. The reopening of the inn in the 1950s was so successful that several old colonial buildings were brought back to life and converted into little shops and restaurants to create the attraction of the Towne of Historic Smithville.

Storybook Land

Located 10 miles / 16 km west of Atlantic City, Storybook Land is a 20-acre / 8-hectare theme park for young kids, with dozens of fairy-tale buildings and attractions mimicking popular childhood stories. Santa Claus even shows his face in November and there are also many rides and a picnic area.
