Detroit Churches and Cathedrals

There are some remarkable churches, religious buildings and temples within the city of Detroit. Currently one of America's oldest Roman Catholic parishes is to be found at the St. Anne de Detroit Church, which stands close to the Michigan Central Station and fronts a large brick plaza.

Another noteworthy church is the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Woodward Avenue, which is to be found right next to the Boston-Edison Historic district and now appears on the National Register of Historic Places, being added in 1982. Other important churches in Detroit include St. Mary's, St. Joseph's and the Sweetest Heart of Mary.


Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament

Serving as the official seat of Detroit's archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese, the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament features Gothic Revival style architecture and stands on the northern side of the city centre, close to Lawrence Park. Although the parish began its life in 1905, it was not until 1913 that construction work commenced, with the interior finally being completed in 1930.

Mariners' Church

Mariners' Church can be found in downtown Detroit and features imposing Gothic-style architecture from the mid-19th century. Attractions include regular parish services, scenic views and an interesting history, which includes the successful moving of the whole church many years ago, from its nearby original location.

Mariners' Church

Situated in the Cultural Center area, on Temple Street, the Masonic Temple is actual the world's oldest temple of its kind, dating back to the 1920s. Towering over the surrounding area, the Masonic is a vast building used for a number of special event throughout the year, and features a cavernous interior capable of seating around 5,000 people.

Second Baptist Church

The Second Baptist Church is located in the Greektown district and is known for its checkered history. This is actually the oldest African-American church in the whole state and was built in the 1830s.

St. Anne de Detroit Church

The St. Anne de Detroit Church is an ancient church in American terms, dating back to the beginning of the 18th century. This important Catholic building is actually one of the oldest in the USA and has been rebuilt and renovated over the years, with construction of the current building completed in the 1880s. Visitors should look out for the historic stained-glass windows, stone carvings, wooden altar (almost 200 years old), large church pipe organ and daily services.

Sweetest Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church

Located within the Forest Park area, the Sweetest Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church was built in the latter part of the 19th century and is designated as a Michigan State Historic Site. With a strong Polish ethnicity within the parish, many of the celebrations held here have their roots in Polish traditions.
