Baltimore Gay and Lesbian Scene

(Baltimore, Maryland - MD, USA US)

The city of Baltimore is a fairly large and expansive metropolis, and within its boundaries is a thriving gay and lesbian community, with plentiful bars and nightspots to visit when the evening comes along.

Much of the local LGBT scene is concentrated around a handful of principal neighborhoods, namely Fells Point, Highlandtown and the very lively Mount Vernon. For the best choice of gay bars in Baltimore, Mount Vernon should most certainly be your first port of call, while there are also a number of bars dotted around the districts of Canton, Cedmont, Charles Village and Federal Hill, as well as the downtown district, where Club Orpheus ranks amongst the oldest nightclubs for underground music.

Popular bars within Mount Vernon can be found lining roads such as North Charles Street, West Eager Street, West Lexington Street, Park Avenue and West Read Street, where both the Drinkery and Jay's on Read cater to the local LGBT crowd. The Drinkery is a very relaxed place to hang out and socialise, with a jukebox and an enticing atmosphere, while at Jay's, live piano music and tasty food are the order of the day.

Baltimore Gay and Lesbian Pride Festival

Baltimore's annual pride celebration is not to be missed and has its origins all the way back in the mid-1970s. Today, this hugely popular festival takes place every year in the middle of June, being organised by the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore.

Roughly 30,000 people now attend the city's pride celebrations, coming to watch the afternoon procession at 16:00 and join the Block Party at 18:00, which takes place around Eager Street and Charles Street, roughly ten blocks away from Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

The main pride events always tend to be centered around Mount Vernon and Druid Hill Park. In past years, mass 'WeDo' wedding ceremonies have been quite a spectacle, along with the High Heel Race on Read Street. Further highlights include Twilight on the Terrace at Gertrude's Restaurant, within the Baltimore Museum of Art, along with live music, drag performances and plenty of parties.
