Baltimore Churches and Cathedrals

(Baltimore, Maryland - MD, USA)

Baltimore is called home by many historic churches, chapels and religious buildings, with the majority of major faiths and religious beliefs being well represented here.

With over 400 churches, including almost 100 Roman Catholic churches and around 50 Jewish synagogues, most hold regular services, welcoming visitors and worshippers. The beautiful Basilica of the Assumption (full name - Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is especially impressive and resides on the northern side of the city centre, where it stands on Cathedral Street, close to Preston Gardens Park and just across from the Enoch Pratt Free Library.

Often simply referred to as the Baltimore Basilica, this church was built between the years of 1806 and 1821, being crowned with an enormous double-shell dome and awarded the title of 'minor basilica' in 1937 by Pope Pius XI. A major restoration project was carried out between 2003 and 2006, at the cost of almost $35 million.
