Situated in the state of Maryland, Baltimore is an independent city with many interesting districts and neighborhoods. The city takes its name from Cæcilius Calvert, the 2nd Baron of Baltimore who was the founding proprietor of the Maryland Colony.

As a coastal city, much of the action is to be found around the harbor area, with the Inner Harbor district of downtown Baltimore being home to some of the city's main attractions. Fells Point is one of the most populated districts in the city, with many of the city's 63,000 residents residing here, while many more live in various pockets of the downtown area. This is also a major US seaport, with good connections.


Downtown District

The downtown district is the city's central core made up of a number of smaller sub-regions including the City Center, Inner Harbor, West Side and Camden Yards. The Inner Harbor area of Baltimore is where many of the city's attractions can be found, including the National Aquarium and Port Discovery Children's Museum, are based. The west side is an area subject to development, while Camden Yards serves as the gateway to the entire downtown district.

Fells Point District

Otherwise known as Fell's Point Historic District, this region of the city is located on the waterfront just east of Baltimore's Inner Harbor. Fells Point is home to a rather large residential area and its inhabitants enjoy the wide selection of lively entertainment options here. Restaurants, pubs, saloons, bars and nightclubs operate amid live music venues, galleries and museums.

Mount Vernon Cultural District

Mount Vernon Cultural District lies a short distance northwest of the Inner Harbor area and is a region with a close association to the arts. Here you'll find the Walters Art Museum, Maryland Historical Society and the Peabody Institute among other centers and institutes. Besides art and culture, this part of Baltimore is home to a fine selection of modern, trendy shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Southwest Baltimore

Known as SoWeBo among its hip residents, the Southwest Baltimore district is a developing area with a distinctly bohemian flavor. Artists and artisans of all descriptions have made SoWeBo their home, with Union Square being a popular residential spot for cool kids. The B&O Railroad Museum at Mount Clare Station is located in this district and is one of the city's most popular attractions, drawing both admirers and non-admirers of locomotives. You will also find the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum is this district.
