Indianapolis does not have a reputation for being a concrete jungle like many of America's big cities and contains a number of impressive gardens and parks. Even so, many of the more urban districts in Indianapolis constitute fairly heavily built up areas.

There are a number of notable parks, gardens and recreational areas to head for in Indianapolis that offer considerable greenery, with White River State Park being located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. This veritable oasis in the desert is the city's favorite patch of greenbelt.

At Indianapolis Eagle Creek Park visitors have access to over 3,900 acres / 1,550 hectares of dry parkland as well as an additional 1,400 acres / 560 hectares of water. The park's facilities are numerous and include picnic and fishing areas, shelters, a sailboat marina, marsh and bird sanctuary and an archery range. Windsurfing is a popular activity at the marina, while many people also like to spend time bird-watching in the woodland areas.

White River State Park

White River State Park is hailed as one of the finest parks in the state and is located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Within the park is a wide selection of green spaces for either relaxing or pursuing outdoor entertainments such as biking and rollerblading. The park's central canal has pedal boats for hire or alternatively gondolas complete with private gondolier are available. During the summer months the park's amphitheater hosts a selection of outdoor performances.

Garfield Park

Garfield Park is the oldest park in Indianapolis, having been a feature of the city since 1889. Besides a conservatory and sunken garden, the park is home to a wealth of amenities including picnic shelters, tennis courts, horse shoe courts, a seasonal aquatic center and the MacAllister Center for Performing Arts.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park is a popular family park in Indianapolis, offering pleasant areas of greenery and a good selection of amenities. For sports fans there are tennis courts, baseball and softball diamonds and football fields, while for those wishing to merely relax there are six picnic shelters as well as some significant grassy areas. Boating is also available on the park's 'White River'.
