Denver forms a major crossroads for the mid-West as a gateway to the Rockies to the west and the Great Plains spreading out to the east. As a result, Denver is somewhat of a travel and transportation hub, with the city of Denver easily accessible by road, air or rail travel.

The city itself boasts a light rail system that travels to many of Denver's most popular attractions, making getting around downtown a breeze. Adding to Denver's charm is its excellent travel network of bicycle routes present throughout the city.

Denver International Airport (DEN) / Arriving by Air

Denver International Airport is one of the busiest in the USA, handling over 33 million passengers annually and offering regular flights all over the country. There are several transfer options available covering the 45-minute drive between the airport and downtown, including buses, shuttles, taxis and car rentals. Car Rental

All the major car rental companies have offices at the airport and in downtown Denver. Driving is Denver is fairly straightforward and presents no major problems apart from the usual problems presented by any large city, namely congestion and limited parking. A car is not really needed for travel in downtown Denver, but is useful for exploring the countryside around Denver, especially up into the Rockies and south to Colorado Springs and surrounding attractions. Be aware that Colorado is less tolerant of speeding than other states and fines are stiff.

Renting a car provide an economical way to travel around the Denver area, with some firms offering discounts for car hire lasting three days of longer. Major car rental companies in the Denver area include Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, National and Thrifty.

Buses and Coaches

Greyhound Coaches link Denver with major regional destinations, as well as offering long haul trans-continental trips, although it is a rather slow and uncomfortable way to travel. Coaches stop at the Denver Bus Terminal. The Cultural Connection Trolley offers an all-day pass enabling visitors to travel between all the city's major attractions, offering a great way to get orientated.

Trains

Denver is a major stop on the east-west California Zephyr operated by Amtrak between San Francisco and Chicago. The service runs daily with trains stopping at Denver's Union Station, and Denver's RTD light rail line connects downtown with points north, south, east and west.

Taxis

Taxis are easily found throughout the city, with concentrations locations in tourist areas such as downtown LoDo and popular tourist attractions. They can be hailed from the street, although booking or waiting at a designated taxi stand is preferred.
