Calgary Museums and Art Galleries

Calgary offers its fair share of museums and art galleries and although the city does not boast eons of history, there is plenty to learn about the region and the First Nations peoples.

Among the many excellent cultural exhibit spaces and art galleries are the Science Center, the attractive Art Gallery of Calgary, a military museum, the well laid out Fort Calgary Historic Park and the much touted Glenbow Museum.




Art Gallery of Calgary

Located in the downtown area, the Art Gallery of Calgary exhibits local and regional contemporary art in two, tastefully renovated buildings. There are also national and regional shows held at the gallery throughout the year.

Fort Calgary Historic Park

Fort Calgary Historic Park was established in 1875 by the North West Mounted Police to prevent traders from Montana selling whiskey to the locals. The fort is located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers and was in operation until 1914. For a history of the Indians (First Nations) of the region, the European settlers and the Mounted Police, visit the brilliant Interpretive Center.

Calgary Science Center

Calgary Science Center is located in West End downtown and it is a great facility where kids can learn and have fun at the same time. There are interactive science exhibits; shows at Alberta's largest indoor theater, the Discovery Dome; and the excellent Children's Discovery Center.

Glenbow Museum

The Glenbow Museum is a comprehensive facility that is touted as western Canada's largest museum, with more than 20 permanent galleries that depict the Canadian West, along with three, special annual exhibitions. You will find artifacts of the First Nations of the Calgary region, a collection of ancient Buddhist and Hindu sculptures at the Asian exhibit and a military collection of medieval armor and samurai swords. In addition, the Nitsitapiisinni exhibit retells the story of the Blackfoot people.

Museum of the Regiments

The Museum of the Regiments is the largest military museum in western Canada, featuring the history of Calgary-based regiments as far back as 1900, with exhibits including various memorabilia. The displays are well thought out and touch on the Northwest Mounted Police and Canada's role in the Boer War.
