Calgary Hotels and Accommodation

(Calgary, Alberta - AB, Canada)

Calgary has a very good spread of hotels and establishments for all budgets, ranging from cheap budget motels near downtown to the costlier highly rated hotels along the main highways into the city. Summer is a fairly busy time in the city, when the demand for accommodation in Calgary increases.

Hotels are especially expensive during the annual Calgary Stampede rodeo event, which regularly draws some 350,000 visitors to the city and promotes itself as being the 'Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth'. Lodging during the Stampede festival soon becomes scarce and occupancy levels peak, together with room rates.

Where to Stay

Travelers on a budget and looking for cheap accommodation options should base themselves in downtown Calgary, where there is a limited yet good choice of cheap rooms. Business oriented lodging within the downtown district often provides weekend discounts, to entice tourists on Friday and Saturday nights.

In general, most mid-range hotels in Calgary tend to reside outside of the downtown core, with the majority comprising familiar chains and being close to shops, restaurants and attractions.

The Macleod Trail is one of Calgary's main thoroughfares and has a large collection of hotels running along its length, such as the Best Western Centre, the Comfort Inn, the Econo Lodge, the Holiday Inn South Macleod and the Carriage House. Prices in this area of Calgary range from budget to mid-range.

In addition, Motel Village, to the northwest of downtown Calgary, is a vast accommodation base and is to be found at the corner of the Banff Trail Northwest and the Crowchild Trail Northwest. Many high quality hotels with business facilities can be found near Calgary International Airport, such as the Best Western on 18th Avenue Northeast, the Days Inn on Sunridge Way Northeast, the Hilton Garden Inn on the Pegasus Road Northeast, the Radisson on 16th Avenue Northeast, and the Super 8 Motel on the Barlow Trail Northeast.

For luxury accommodation in Calgary, consider the centrally located Hyatt Regency on Center Street South, the glitzy Deerfoot Inn and Casino on 35th Street Southeast, the historic Fairmont Palliser Hotel on 9th Avenue Southwest, and the Westin on 4th Avenue, which comes with a rooftop swimming pool. Also of note is the Sheraton Suites Calgary Hotel on the Barclay Parade, which stands conveniently close to the Eau Claire Market and Prince's Island Park.
