Calgary Neighborhoods, Locations and Districts

(Calgary, Alberta - AB, Canada)

Calgary lies sandwiched between the monotonous prairies of middle Canada to the east and the awe-inspiring peaks of the vast Rocky Mountain range to the west. Set on the Bow and Elbow rivers, Calgary is an attractive city and is well laid out, being divided into four quadrants - Calgary's Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest districts.

Calgary city center is marked by the coming together of the two rivers and the grid-style downtown district is just west of here. Here are Calgary's main districts, locations and neighborhoods.

Eau Claire Festival Market

Eau Claire Market is located to the north of downtown Calgary on Barclay Parade, which is opposite the popular Prince's Island Park. Eau Claire is one of the premier locations in Calgary for food and entertainment, with shopping zones, numerous inexpensive restaurants, multiplex cinemas, an interactive entertainment center and an arcade.

Southeast District

The Southeast district of Calgary is more of an industrial area, yet it boasts some quality attractions, shopping malls and dining venues. There are some big real estate operations going on in this area of Calgary in a move to better itself. Historic Inglewood lies to the north of the area (east of downtown Calgary), while at the western end of the Southeast district is the Macleod Trail Strip - a lengthy stretch of restaurants, hotels and neon lights.

Southwest District

Southwest covers the best that Calgary has to offer, with the beautiful North Glenmore Reservoir in the south and the bustling downtown and Eau Claire Market in the north. Fourth Street Restaurant district and the 17th Avenue shopping districts are popular areas in this district of Calgary, while Prince's Island Park is a peaceful haven away from the trappings of city life.

Northeast District

As the name suggests, Northeast is located to the northeast of downtown Calgary, encompassing Calgary International Airport and several neighborhoods. The Northeast district lies to the east of the main north to south Deerfoot Trail, which runs between Calgary and Edmonton. Northeast contains many worthwhile attractions including Calgary Zoo, the Prehistoric Park and the Botanical Gardens, as well as many hotels and shopping and dining options.

Northwest District

Northwest is somewhat upscale compared with the more working-class Northeast and it encompasses Calgary University and some quality attractions. Canada Olympic Park and McMahon Stadium are also situated here and the popular shopping and dining area of Calgary's Kensington Village is located on the banks of the Bow River.

Stephen Avenue Walk

Stephen Avenue Walk stretches from First Street Southeast to Fourth Street Southwest along Eight Avenue in downtown Calgary and is one of the city's highlights. Many of the historic homes and shops in this affable district of Calgary have been restored or renovated and the area is becoming increasingly popular for strolling, where shops, galleries and restaurants propagate.
