Porto Alegre Art Galleries

(Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil)

Porto Alegre contains a small section of public art galleries, with some appealing art exhibitions to be found at the Usina do Gasometro - an interesting old powerplant fronting the Rio Guaiba, recently converted into a cultural centre. Tourists may also like to pay a visit to the Mário Quintana House of Culture in downtown Porto Alegre, which comes with exhibition spaces, a theatre and regular movie screenings.

Not to be missed, the Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art really is one attraction worth looking out for and has become a principal venue for regional artists to exhibit their works, being considered to be the state's most important gallery. Housed within a distinctive neoclassical building which contrasts greatly with the surrounding clean lines of modern architecture, the Museum of Art came into being in 1954 and moved to its present setting in the late 1970s, where it has grown greatly in stature ever since.
