Porto Alegre Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

Being situated within a subtropical zone, the city of Porto Alegre comes with a humid subtropical climate. Since the city is located on the southerly side of the equator, Porto Alegre's seasons are different to those of Europe and the USA, with summer falling between December and February, and winter running from June to August.

The weather experienced in South Brazil sees more distinctive seasonal differences and temperature differences. Porto Alegre is at its hottest in December, January and February, when daytime temperatures average around 30°C / 86°F and often rise higher. June and July are noticeably cooler, dipping just below 20°C / 68°F by day and dropping to a slightly chilly 10°C / 50°F by night.


The winter climate is known for being highly changeable and can at times be a little on the windy side. To the north of Porto Alegre, the mountains of Serra Gaucha even see the occasional sprinkling of snow.

The summer weather in Porto Alegre is famed for its hot and humid climate, and unlike northern parts of Brazil, is not especially wet. In fact, precipitation levels are fairly average all through the year. Rainfall during the summer season tends to come in the form of thunderstorms, with infrequent tropical storms and on occasion, cyclones.

November is generally the driest month, with precipitation levels of approximately 8 cm / 3 inches, compared to the wetter month of June, when rainfall averages some 13 cm / 5 inches.
