Porto Alegre Beaches

(Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil)

Porto Alegre is a busy waterfront destination and within easy reach of the city are a number of enticing sandy beaches.

Many tourists and locals come to these beaches to sunbathe, play volleyball and enjoy the sunsets. However, it should be noted that the beaches around Porto Alegre are not known for their water quality and so swimming is not recommended, due to pollution problems. Those wishing to cool down in the water will find a selection of more suitable nearby beaches along the Rio Grande do Sul coastline, where the water quality is acceptable for swimming.

General Information

The summer months (December to February) are when the beaches of Porto Alegre are at their busiest. The city lies next to Guaiba Lake, which confusingly is actually a river. A further four rivers feed into the Guaiba Lake, meaning that there are plenty of sandy beaches to choose between.

The best beaches are generally around an hour's drive away from central Porto Alegre. It is worth bearing in mind that some of the most beautiful and peaceful of these beaches are not always easy to access, and therefore, hiring a 4WD vehicle is a sensible option if you are intending to properly explore the coastline.
