Nassau Shopping and Districts

(Nassau / Paradise Island, New Providence, Bahamas)

Photo of shoppers enjoying a meal at the Marina VillageAlthough shopping options on Paradise Island are good and many department stores can be found here, serious shopping is best done in Nassau. The most popular stores are the duty free offerings, and Americans will often come here for the weekend, saving up to 50 percent on electronics, perfume, and jewellery.

Paradise Island is made up of resort malls that are home to expensive boutiques with the latest fashions, as well as having so-called straw markets where cheaper souvenirs can be had. The Atlantis Resort has the greatest concentration of shops on the island.

When to Shop and Where

Atlantis encompasses the Marina Village, a purpose-built shopping street mimicking that of Nassau's Bay Street. It is good for shopping, eating and entertainment, and is fantastic for a stroll, although prices are generally horrendous on everything from clothing to jewellery, handbags, sunglasses and crafts.

The Crystal Court at Atlantis resides in the Royal Towers and is loaded with high-end shops, such as Cartier and Versace, along with lesser known top boutiques - Lalique, Bulgari and Faconnable. Gifts and accessories are also a big deal in Crystal Court. Atlantis' Beach Tower is good for Colombian emeralds.

Here you will find many types of Bahamian handicrafts, including conch shells, blown glass, ceramics, straw items and colourful Junkanoo paintings. Located underneath the Paradise Island Bridge, the Potter's Cay Market is the place to go for freshly caught seafood.

There are also various other stores dotted about both Nassau and Paradise Island, although most are connected with Atlantis. The Atlantis Logo Stores are good for more traditional items, however, while the Pro Shop is for sports apparel and equipment. Most outlets have fairly long shopping hours, remaining open until late at night.
