Medical Tourism, Treatments and Surgery in Nassau

(Nassau / Paradise Island, New Providence, Bahamas)

Nowadays, medical tourism Nassau is a fast growing phenomenon, as the cost of surgical and other procedures in Europe, North America and the UK spirals to unprecedented and unaffordable heights.

The government of the Bahamas is keen to reintroduce Nassau as a strong player in the medical tourism field. With prices of various treatments and operations far lower than elsewhere in the world, combined treatment and vacation packages are gaining ground as a way to receive high quality medical care in Nassau, and a relaxing break can cost less than half the cost of just the treatment elsewhere.

Advantages of Medical Tourism

Nassau's laid-back vibe and tropical climate are perfect for relaxation both before and after treatment, with recuperation in a luxurious spa or resort environment an added bonus. Especially relevant for US and UK medical tourists is that new and revolutionary treatments for life-threatening illnesses are being successfully used here, while they are still wading through the extended process of approval elsewhere.

Approval of clinics and hospitals in Nassau, like elsewhere, involves rigorous investigation as regards safety, efficacy and ethics before certification is given. Equipment, staff and facilities must also pass strenuous checks. An important issue when deciding on a destination for medical tourism is the ease of communication with medical professionals. English is widely spoken and understood by Nassau doctors, unlike in many of the South-East Asian medical tourism centres.

Medical Procedures

Several ground-breaking procedures, such as ultrasound therapy for prostate cancer and an innovative new minimally-invasive heart valve replacement are now available. Open heart surgery in Nassau has been successfully performed for over ten years and laser eye surgery is also popular here. A recent innovation is an addiction treatment centre in Nassau.

Elective orthopaedic surgery and cosmetic surgery in Nassau are also available, with medical tourism packages often linking stays at famous beach resorts on the islands with treatment. Minimally-invasive laser surgery with certain types of cancer is also available here.

Hospitals

The Doctors Hospital is the most highly regarded private hospital in Nassau and the Bahamas, and has recently passed with flying colours the four-year accreditation process of the US-based Joint Commission International agency. It joins only 200 other hospitals in the world who have this prestigious accreditation. The hospital is now gearing up to market medical tourism packages in Nassau, mainly in the fields of cosmetic and elective orthopaedic surgery.

The other main hospital is the 400-bed Princess Margaret Hospital, which caters to medical tourists with a range of surgical and medical procedures, including plastic surgery, as well as dentistry.
