Marmaris Museums and Art Galleries

(Marmaris, Mugla Province, Turkey)

Photo of castle fortificationsDespite its extensive history and status, Marmaris only has a handful of museums and galleries, the most intriguing of which is the popular Archaeology Museum, located within Marmaris Castle itself. More than anything, this venue has fine views over the coast and harbour.

There is the odd art gallery in the city as well, while the nearby Museum of Ethnography and Archaeology (towards the city of Mugla) is a must-see for those interested in how folks got by in this region in olden times. Also in the city is the high class Vogue Jewellery and Diamond Centre, where some enormous precious stones can be expected.

The top museum in the city, also known as the Marmaris Archaeology Museum, resides in Marmaris Castle, high above the harbour, on the hill near to the tourist office. In spite of its locale, it's not the world's most fantastic museum, although tourists generally visit as part of a tour of the castle. Inside, the displays reveal the interesting history of the castle, telling the story of the army of 200,000 soldiers who gathered here in 1522. Particular highlights include a few worthy exhibits of stone sculptures and ancient armour. The best way in is from the bazaar, near the Ataturk statue.
