Image of Marmaris KalesiThe landmarks and monuments in Marmaris are diverse, encompassing both ancient and modern, and include a famous local castle. At the coast, just east of the city, lies the well-equipped Marmaris Marina, where there are tourist facilities along with yachting berths. You can reach the marina by strolling along the bustling promenade.

The historic part of Marmaris is also a major landmark in its own right and steeped in the past, having many intriguing sights for the discerning. There is also some quality shopping here, while the Grand Bazaar has cheaper items and a real buzz. Also worth noting, Marmaris National Park and the ancient Iyilik Kayaliklari Archaeological Park are both within easy reach.

Marmaris Castle has been around for thousands of years in one form or another, although the present incarnation hails from the 1500s. It is the seaside city's top landmark and was built by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman, modelled on the castle on Rhodes. Marmaris Castle is continually undergoing permanent restoration work, yet the parts that are open to the public are well maintained and the views of the harbour are simply fantastic. It is also home to a significant museum (the Archaeology Museum) and a popular café.

Netsel Marina

Marmaris Marina, also known as Netsel Marina, is the coastal focus of the city and is home to an array of flashy yachts, shops, restaurants and bars. This is actually the biggest marina in the Southern Aegean and has excellent facilities for both yachties and for tourists. Boat tours around the coast leave from here with Blue Cruise, plus there is also a swimming pool and restored houses nearby.

Historic City / Old Town view

Marmaris Historic City / Old Town

The historic Old Town has been built up around its fort and is replete with buildings from the 16th century onwards. Many of them have been restored and converted into shops, restaurants or bars, set in a tangle of narrow alleys closed off to traffic. It is great to wander around here and get away from the searing heat of the beach, and you don't even need to shop.

Marmaris National Park

This fine national park is not far from Marmaris and Icmeler, and makes for a perfect escape from the beach. It boasts trekking, mountain climbing, mountain biking and horseback riding, and you also have the option of a jeep safari. There are stark forests of pine and oak, as well as groves of olive and oleander, while high plateaus afford panoramic views over the mountains and the coastline. Marmaris National Park also encompasses a number of beaches and offers some good camping facilities.

The Grand Bazaar certainly lives up to its name and this traditional marketplace of the city is simply vast, being filled with shops, stalls, barbers and eateries galore. It is good to explore the bazaar, along with the Old Town, and you can pick up a good deal on traditional crafts or rugs if you are adept at haggling. Counterfeit clothes and music can also be bought, but be sure to watch the vendor wrap your purchase, as they are good at sleight of hand - think three bowls instead of four.

Iyilik Kayaliklari Archaeological Park

This interesting archaeological park, known as the Rocks of Goodness, is just a short distance to the east of Marmaris and lies within the Iyilik Rocks area. It primarily features ruins going back to the 4th century BC. The Iyilik Kayaliklari Archaeological Park comes with fine views of the coast, since it is located on an incline. If you don't fancy the jaunt, there are also Ottoman period ruins nearer to the city itself.
