Palma Nova Shopping and Districts

(Palma Nova, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain)

Shopping is a cornerstone of a holiday in Palma Nova, and there are dozens of boutiques and craft stores lining the waterfront. Locally, vendors focus on simple gifts, swimwear and beach accessories. All that's required for a more thorough selection is a side step to Palma, where the handicraft boutiques are thick. Itinerant markets also tour the island, with something in easy reach of Palma Nova at least five days a week.

As it's part of the main resort district that stretches south from Palma to Magaluf, Palma Nova has a great deal of boutique shops and souvenir stands on hands. The densest concentration is around the harbour in an area that's comfortable to navigate on foot. Shopping opportunities closer to tourist beaches tend to primarily offer beachwear and gifts, rather than everyday goods.

When to Shop and Where

Traditional markets still prosper here and they track around the island according to a regular schedule. The markets nearest to Palma Nova are held in Calvia (on Monday morning), Galatzo (Tuesday morning) and Andraitx (Wednesday morning). Beyond this, the capital city of Palma stages a major street market every Sunday, while Magaluf puts on a car boot sale every Saturday.

In Palma, tourists will find bigger shops and a few department stores. Arts and crafts boutiques are tucked away in the old quarter, where they deal in ceramics, woven baskets, embroidery and hand-carved wooden bowls. One of the most unique purchases you can make in Palma Nova is a pair of traditional espadrilles - a kind of lightweight rope-soled shoe traditionally made here.

Carefully crafted faux pearls have been a traditional Mallorcan product since the 1800s, and boutiques in Palma Nova have a fine selection on hand. Vendors insist that only experts can distinguish between a true pearl and a Mallorcan impostor. These can be a fun gift or souvenir, as long as the person buying understands they're not buying a genuine pearl.
