Getting Around, Bergen Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Bergen, Hordaland, Norway)

Picture of scenic city viewA prominent transport hub with good connections into the Western Fjords area of Norway, Bergen features countless buses and trains, which travel into the city centre from as far away as Oslo. Within Bergen city centre itself, public bus transport is the cheapest and most convenient way to get around.

However, unless you have far to travel, walking is often the easiest way to reach your destination and it is possible to walk from one side of the city centre to the other in around 20 minutes. Express boat transport and passenger ferries are also available and connect Bergen with Balestrand in around four hours, together with Stavanger and Flam, in Sognefjord.

Worth considering, those who choose to purchase the Bergen Card will be able to enjoy free use of the city's public transport, along with usage of municipal car parks, the funicular railway and free access to many popular museums.

Car Rental

In order to reduce the traffic within central Bergen, the speed limits are extremely low and many of the streets are now one-way only. Therefore, if you simply wish to travel from one side of the city to the other, you are best off either walking or using public transport. Much of the parking around the city centre is also restricted to residents. However, if you are intending to drive outside of the city itself, then hiring a car makes a lot of sense. It is even possible to drive from Bergen all the way to Oslo, using the E16, although this journey is likely to last around seven hours and can be a little hazardous during the winter time.

Buses and Coaches

Regional bus transport operating in Bergen is run by Nor-Way Bussekspress, with regular buses travelling into Alesund (ten and a half hours), Odda (three and three quarter hours), Oslo (11 hours), Stavanger (five and three quarter hours), Stryn (six and a half hours), and Trondheim (14 and a half hours), amongst other less popular destinations. Buses are usually the cheapest way to travel outside of Bergen, but not the fastest. However, during the daytime, public bus transport around the city itself is extremely convenient and there is even a free service linking both the bus and train stations. Tickets can be purchased as you step onto the bus and remain valid for subsequent journeys, until the time printed on the ticket has expired.

Trains

Commuter trains regularly travel between central Bergen and the nearby easterly suburb of Arn. The Norwegian capital of Oslo is also connected to Bergen by rail transport and this long journey lasts between six and seven hours, passing some particularly beautiful scenery, such as the forested coastline of Bergen, the Hardangervidda Plateau and many expansive lakes. Further trains travel between the city and Myrdal (two and a quarter hours) and Voss (one and a quarter hours). The railway station is easy to find and located on the eastern side of the city centre.
