Bergen Restaurants and Dining

(Bergen, Hordaland, Norway)

Photo of harbourfront viewThere is a good number of restaurants and similar dining options within Bergen, but it is worth spending a little time to search out the very best of these eateries. Central Bergen contains the largest selection of restaurants, which all appear to be vying for your attention.

However, if you are prepared to look outside of Bergen city centre, then you will find a good supply of cheaper restaurants and dining venues, serving everything from hearty Norwegian fare to pizzas and pasta. In September, many eateries within the city choose to serve 'raspeballer', which is a traditional meal in Norway and a combination of turnip, potato and salted meat.

Where to Eat

The city's coastal situation and busy fish market on the Torget Square means that restaurants in Bergen often feature seafood on their menus. It is always a memorable experience to visit the bustling fish market, where you can often sample tasty seafood delicacies both at the market itself and also at numerous nearby eateries. These tasty snacks include salmon rolls, freshly cooked shrimps and crab legs.

Restaurants in central Bergen can be found around the Engen and Teatergaten, along with nearby Neumannsgate, Torgallmenningen, Strandgaten and Kong Oscars Gate. Hardly fine dining, the Storsenter at the city's bus stations features a series of inexpensive food stalls serving sandwiches, burgers and cheap eats, whilst within the inner harbour area of Bergen, the Zachariasbryggen Quay features a good bakery, along with several pubs and restaurants boasting waterfront views, where you can watch the boats arriving at the harbour.
